First, the usability engineer creates the matching exercise, then performs the matching exercise to lay the baseline for later comparison. WebCAT then creates the matching exercise for the user. Once the matching exercise is complete, WebCAT processes the data, performs a comparison with the baseline results and presents the exercise results in html form as well as recording it in standard ASCII, comma delimited text.

Making A Difference - The Impact of Inspections

We use this ratio to measure the effectiveness of inspections and other evaluative techniques in getting usability improvements into products. We inspected ten commercial software products and achieved an average impact ratio of 78%. We discuss factors affecting this ratio and its value in helping us to appraise usability engineering's impact on products. The weekly testing machine The usability group started weekly testing of their product in the Spring of 1996, moving the "labs" to the downtown Palo Alto facilities. Usability test participants include computer novices, Internet novices, regular Internet users and, starting in 1997, current WebTV customers. One new twist is the addition of what they call "Remote Testing" and "Longitudinal Testing" to complement the current lab and field studies.

Results showed that, while increased depth did harm search performance on the web, a medium condition of depth and breadth outperformed the broadest, shallow web structure overall. Keywords Information retrieval, memory, depth and breadth in menu design, web page design, hypertext, searching. Jacko & Salvendy found reliable differences in reaction time for depth, breadth, subjects, and the depth by breadth interaction.

We’re thinking "great literature" (or at least "product brochure"), while the user's reality is much closer to "billboard going by at 60 miles an hour. It makes sense that we picture a more rational, attentive user when we're designing pages. But from the dog’s point of view, all he’s saying is "blah blah GINGER blah blah blah blah GINGER blah blah blah.
