When he tested the "mind-reading" Adaptive Brain Interface (ABI), he found that after three hours' practice he was able to write a message by thought alone; his words were: "Arsenal Football Club." Indeed, patients are able to communicate with a computer by "thinking" alone. Whereas scanning specifies a method for generating input, abbreviation expansion, as the name implies, specifies a method for minimizing the amount of input needed to generate whole words or phrases. Word prediction is another method which does not generate input but rather allows minimal input to be mapped to richer input.
