Article:www.ascusc.org/jcmc/vol6/issue1/yun.html
Abstract Recent developments in communication technologies have created alternative survey methods through e-mail and Web sites. Both methods use electronic text communication, require fewer resources, and provide faster responses than traditional paper and pencil methods. In this study we conduct an analysis of the characteristics of three survey response modes: post, e-mail, and Web site.

Summary: Why Free Software's strategy of copying Microsoft as fast as its tiny little legs can carry it is a dumb idea. These afflicted Free Software developers have been agaggle to chase after the meaningless sex appeal of Windows-borne User Interfaces. But in the Windows world as well, the developers who create the computer programs you run are the least qualified to design a UI.

Indeed, patients are able to communicate with a computer by "thinking" alone. Whereas scanning specifies a method for generating input, abbreviation expansion, as the name implies, specifies a method for minimizing the amount of input needed to generate whole words or phrases. Word prediction is another method which does not generate input but rather allows minimal input to be mapped to richer input.

This paper reports a usability study of the open-source Greenstone Digital Library collection-building software. Open-source is becoming an increasingly popular software development method, producing successful software such as the Linux operating system and the Apache web server. This paper starts to address this issue through a usability study of the open-source Greenstone Digital Library Software.

Human Factors professionals come in several shapes and sizes: User Experience Strategists, Market Research Analysts, Usability Engineers, and Information Architects.   Despite our divergent titles, our goal is the same: to achieve an optimal user experience for a given user type.   We can interview users, observe and test them while they complete standard tasks, apply heuristic analyses to product designs, write user scenarios, conduct ethnographic research, and create user flow ...

The usability of open source software can be improved in a number of ways: by developing interface design guidelines, informal feedback from users and usability testing. The test was inspired by the recently conducted usability test of GNOME desktop software[1]. Our goal is to contribute to usability of an open source software package. The test involved a comparative usability analysis of StarOffice Calc and Microsoft Excel.

UCI's Expectation-Driven Event Monitoring (EDEM) provides developers with a platform for creating software agents that are deployed over the Internet to collect application usage data to help developers improve the fit between application design and use. EDEM can be used to illuminate how applications are used, to uncover mismatches in actual versus expected use, and to increase user involvement in the evolution of interactive systems. This research is aimed at helping developers make more ...

Scientists studying the way cell-phone use interferes with driving performance say it's not so much dialing and driving one-handed that distracts motorists and causes accidents. Opponents, including most cell-phone suppliers, argued that there are no accident data to support a ban on phoning while driving. "When drivers were conversing over the cell phone they talked slower than when they talked to the passenger," he said.
