Traditional usability engineering techniques can be difficult to apply to web usability evaluation because the users are heterogeneous and geographically dispersed. The objective of the NIST Web Metrics Testbed is to explore the feasibility of a range of tools and techniques that support rapid, remote, and automated testing and evaluation of website usability. The prototypes are used to support the usability engineering research of the Visualization and Usability Group (VUG).

Conventional web interfaces respond to and consider only mouse clicks when defining a user model. We have extended this and take into account all mouse movements on a page as an additional layer of information for inferring user interest. We have developed a straightforward way to record all mouse movements on a page, and conducted a user study to analyze and investigate mouse behavior trends.

There is a balance that needs to be found in every application between the size of these more functional windows and other usable screen area for menus or other windows with textual and image information. Practitioners should look for easier ways to view file and application windows in graphical user interfaces. Because of the trend towards multiple window applications, a goal should be to determine a good guideline for balance between the sizes of various types of windows.

The resulting information exhibits an extraordinary variety of patterns which reflect and refract our culture, our minds, and our bodies. Our present relationship with numbers reveals both a highly developed tool and a highly developed user, working together to measure, create, and predict both ourselves and the world around us. One intriguing result of this symbiosis is that the numeric system we use to describe patterns, is actually used in a patterned fashion to describe.
