user modeling to increase the effectiveness of an intelligent information retrieval system" [Bra87: p. I3R exhibits all the fundamental IR and user modeling concepts discussed so far and can be considered as a blueprint for the application of user modeling techniques in IR. The I3R user model incorporates both long-term knowledge for a general characterization of the user, such as the user's domain knowledge, summary of previous interactions and requests, and short-term knowledge concerning...

Abstract: A quantitative analysis of a large collection of expert-rated web sites reveals that page-level metrics can accurately predict if a site will be highly rated. The analysis also provides empirical evidence that important metrics, including page composition, page formatting, and overall page characteristics, differ among web site categories such as education, community, living, and finance. These metrics concern page composition (e.g., word count, link count, graphic count), page ...

Usability evaluation is the analysis of the design of a product or system in order to evaluate the match between users and a product or system within a particular context. Six usability evaluation methods and six data collection techniques are discussed, including advantages and limitations of each. The other methods are designed to support human factors engineers with evaluating the usability of a product and will be referred to as usability testing.

Posted 15 Feb 2001 by jono Since I have been into Linux, I have really been concentrating my efforts on the world of the Linux Desktop. An example is the X Window system. If people are going to compare Windows and KDE or Windows and GNOME or whatever, and they notice that the Linux Desktop is slower than the Windows Desktop, they are not going to leave with a good impression.

Usability by principles is about deciding ahead of time what usability properties will be desirable on this interface, and what types of people will use it. A robust interface not only protects the device from accidental damage due to an incorrect input, but also protects the user and the entities that the device acts upon. Novice users usually prefer directed interfaces with an obvious path; non-directed interfaces are more powerful but more difficult to use.

The machine's developers now hope that it will eventually enable paralysed people to type, play computer games and even steer their wheelchairs using mind power. When he tested the "mind-reading" Adaptive Brain Interface (ABI), he found that after three hours' practice he was able to write a message by thought alone; his words were: "Arsenal Football Club." The machine's software then "learns" the brainwaves that result, and the user learns how to think in a way that makes the machine react.

Article:goanna.cs.rmit.edu.au/~gl/research/HCC/interact97.html
The graphical user interface (GUI) is now firmly established as the preferred user interface for end users in most situations. We believe that 3D GUIs -- graphical user interfaces which utilise 3D graphics -- offer significant potential for improvement over today's 2D GUIs, and furthermore, that it is now, or very shortly will be, possible to run such interfaces on personal computers. In this paper, we discuss elements of a prototype 3D GUI we are developing and discuss some early feedback ...

Most previous research investigating visual search has placed targets and distractors in a single depth plane. As presented at ARVO 2000, my most recent research further indicates that spreading the distractors in a visual search across multiple depths planes speeds the search times. With (then) undergraduate student Alyson Hill: In 1997 we investigated the influence of font, font style, and foreground / background color combinations on the readability of text.
