Article:www.sandia.gov/itg/newsletter/dec99/cluster_analysis.html
This paper outlines the premises of and describes a method for using card-sorting and cluster analysis to involve users in the organizational design of Web sites. Cluster analysis is then performed across all participants' card groupings to produce site diagrams. A more user-oriented approach to site structure design requires evaluating users' expectations for organizing a Web site.

Approach We are currently developing software tools and techniques for evaluating the usability of web sites. The second set of tools and techniques we call Web Usability tools; tools developed for use by usability professionals. Usability Awareness Tools In carrying out case studies, we try to identify tools that could be developed to help in the design or testing of web sites.

We use this ratio to measure the effectiveness of inspections and other evaluative techniques in getting usability improvements into products. We inspected ten commercial software products and achieved an average impact ratio of 78%. We discuss factors affecting this ratio and its value in helping us to appraise usability engineering's impact on products. Formal inspections, heuristic evaluations, usability metrics, user testing, walkthroughs, impact ratio usability problems.

The EZSort tool helps interface designers organize information based on users' expectations using statistical cluster analysis. The USort program can be used by card sort participants to sort virtual cards with a simple GUI interface, instead of using physical cards. Once individual card sort results are captured by the USort package, test administrators can use the EZCalc package to manage card sort data from multiple participants, and perform cluster analyses.

"Unobtrusive observation" means you observe what test users do and refrain from interacting with them. "Obtrusive observation" means you interact with test users, e.g. by asking questions. The second method is "obtrusive observation", which means you are allowed to explain design decisions, ask questions, or engage the test user in a discussion.

The life cycle of Web creation is identical to that of traditional software: requirements gathering, analysis, design, implementation, testing, and deployment. HCI principles include an early and consistent focus on end users and their tasks, empirical measurements of system usage, and iterative development. Usability testing is the process by which the human-computer interaction characteristics of a system are measured, and weaknesses are identified for correction.

WebQuilt is a web logging and visualization system that helps web design teams run usability tests (both local and remote) and analyze the collected data. Captured usage traces can be aggregated and visualized in a zooming interface that shows the web pages people viewed. Lastly, users may experience some additional delays with web sites when using the proxy due to overhead in retrieving and processing web pages.
