Aesthetic connotations, moreover, are inevitable: there is no such thing as 'neutral' design" [25]. In this paper, I will discuss the relationship between aesthetics and usability with respect to user interface design as well as specific techniques to insure an aesthetically pleasing design. These components are color, typography, icons, layout, and economy of visuals. Schwinn's color scheme consists of five colors: black, white, blue, red, and tan.

This study investigates the selection of an item from two styles of list boxes. The drop-down box and multi-column box are two user interface components that are frequently used in the Windows 95/NT 4.0 user interface. Our results indicate that the multi-column list approach yields a faster user response time as well as reduced error rates.

"Unobtrusive observation" means you observe what test users do and refrain from interacting with them. "Obtrusive observation" means you interact with test users, e.g. by asking questions. The second method is "obtrusive observation", which means you are allowed to explain design decisions, ask questions, or engage the test user in a discussion.

For many applications, Usability appears to consist of Usefulness and Ease of Use, which influence one another. Users appear to have a good sense of what is usable and what is not, and can apply their internal metrics across domains. Factor analyses following each study suggested that users were evaluating the products primarily using three dimensions, Usefulness, Satisfaction, and Ease of Use.
